Why Can’t People Find My Website? A Plain SEO Guide and a Simple Fix List

Many people publish a personal website for the first time and hit the same question fast: I wrote posts, so why can’t I find them in search?
Here is the key point: “Not found” does not mean “not good.” Most of the time, the page is just not in the search engine’s view yet. SEO is simply how you help search engines see your site, understand it, and show it to people.
This post is simple: no magic, no promises. Only basics and a checklist you can use right away.
What kind of “not found” is it?
Before you fix anything, name the problem. There are three common cases:
- Not indexed at all: the search engine does not know your page exists.
- Indexed but hard to search: the page is in the index, but your keywords are too broad, or the page is not clear enough.
- Found but ranked very low: the page is in search results, but it loses to stronger pages.
A quick check is:
site:your-domain keyword
For example:
site:huajiang.wang SEO
If you see nothing, it may be “not indexed” or “blocked.”
One more note: site: is a rough trick. It is not complete and not real-time. For a sure answer, use webmaster tools, like Google Search Console (URL Inspection and Page indexing).
What does a search engine do? In three lines
Think of a search engine as a patient but strict reader. It does three things:
- Crawl: visit your site and fetch pages.
- Parse: read your HTML (title, text, images, structured data) to know what the page is about.
- Index and rank: store the page, then decide where it should show in results.
SEO maps to these steps:
- Let it reach you (crawl)
- Let it understand you (parse)
- Give it reasons to show you (rank)
A 10-minute checklist (most issues are here)
1) Can your page be opened normally?
- Open the post link in an incognito window (no login, no cache)
- Make sure there is no 404, no redirect loop, no wrong redirect target
2) Does robots.txt block crawlers?
Open:
https://your-domain/robots.txt
If you see rules like Disallow: /, crawlers are blocked.
3) Is the page marked as noindex?
Some sites have:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex" />
This tells search engines “do not index this page.” It is fine for dev, but not for production.
Also watch canonical. If it points to another URL (http vs https, www vs non-www, trailing slash issues), the search engine may treat your page as a duplicate and index a different version.
4) Do you have a sitemap? Does it include your post?
Open:
https://your-domain/sitemap.xml
A sitemap is not required, but it helps search engines discover pages. It should list your post URLs.
5) Is your title and summary clear?
If the title is too vague and the summary is empty, the search engine may not match your page to real queries. Do not stuff keywords, but do say what the page is about.
6) New sites take time
If your domain is new (days or weeks), it is normal to be slow. Search engines are careful with new sites. This is not your fault.
What SEO “basics” did I build in this Next.js blog?
On this blog, I keep it simple. I focus on two things: “can be crawled” and “can be understood.”
1) Robots.txt and sitemap are generated automatically
This means:
- crawlers are not blocked by default
- the sitemap lists pages and posts, so fewer pages are missed
2) Page metadata is complete
Including:
<title>and description- Open Graph / Twitter cards (better sharing, clearer page meaning)
- canonical (avoid split signals across URLs)
3) Each post has structured data (JSON-LD)
Structured data is not a cheat code. It just reduces guessing: title, date, author, cover image, and other facts are given in a standard format.
Three things you can do today
1) Submit your sitemap
If you target global readers, use Google Search Console:
- add and verify your site
- submit
sitemap.xml - use “URL Inspection” to request indexing
- if it still does not show, check “Page indexing” for the reason (blocked by robots, duplicate, crawled but not indexed, and so on)
If you target China users, also submit to Baidu Webmaster Tools.
2) Build internal links
For crawlers, links are roads. Your post should be reachable from:
- home page
- blog list page
- tag pages
Or it may become an “island” page.
3) Run a keyword test
Write one post with a clear topic and a direct title, like:
“Next.js Sitemap: Generate and Submit”
It is easier to see indexing progress. After you learn the pattern, you can go back to your own writing style.
Common mistakes
- Mistake 1: SEO = keyword stuffing. Today, meaning and quality matter more. Stuffing can hurt.
- Mistake 2: Expect results on day one. Many sites cannot do that, especially new domains.
- Mistake 3: Only watch ranking, ignore indexing. Indexing is the base. No index, no ranking.
- Mistake 4: Only do “outside SEO,” ignore your site structure. Clear structure is the long-term win.
A practical ending
SEO is not mysterious. It is basic politeness to a search system: keep the door open, build clear roads, and speak clearly.
If you are in the “not found” stage, do one round of this checklist, then submit your sitemap. After that, it is time and steady writing.
Writing may not bring traffic fast, but it builds structure. Once the structure is there, being found is only a matter of time.
